France Beats Senegal in World Cup Opener As Mbappé Breaks Goalscoring Record

This Tuesday, France defeated Senegal 3-1 at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey during their opening match of Group I, fueled by a historic performance from captain Kylian Mbappé.
The team led by Didier Deschamps performed discreetly during the first half, it found its best version in the complement by Kylian Mbappé, author of a double that set the tone for the French triumph.

The tactical transition designed by the coaching staff allowed the European players to exploit the spaces left by the opponent.
During the first half, both squads maintained a structured tactical scheme, leaving the scoreboard tied at 0-0. However, during the second half, the French team imposed its collective superiority on the field to break down the African defense.
Forward Kylian Mbappé led the offensive line by scoring a double with goals in the 66th and 90+6 minutes. Winger Bradley Barcola extended the lead for the French team in the 82nd minute of the match. For the African side, forward Ibrahim Mbaye scored the only goal for his team in the 90+5 minute.
This victory places the last vice-champion in the first position of Group I, key that will complete its first day with the meeting between Norway and Iraq.

Historic Goalscoring Record
The performance of Kylian Mbappé this Tuesday also marked an unprecedented milestone in French football history. The team captain officially became the all-time top scorer for the national squad.
With his two goals against Senegal, the forward reached 58 international goals for his country. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 57 goals held by Olivier Giroud, who won the world championship in 2022.

The striker achieved this historic milestone in 97 appearances with the national shirt. This means he required 40 fewer international matches than Olivier Giroud to establish the new scoring record.
Furthermore, this performance against the African team raises his overall tally to 14 goals in the World Cup after playing 15 matches. With this number, the French striker surpasses several historical football legends.
Kylian Mbappé moved past the 12 goals of Brazilian legend Pelé, as well as the 13 goals scored by Lionel Messi and Just Fontaine. He now shares the third position in the historical standings with German striker Gerd Müller.
At 27 years of age, the French forward still has several opportunities to expand his international numbers in future tournaments. With a goal average of 0.93 per game in the tournament, the forward remains close to the absolute records. He only trails the 15 goals scored by Ronaldo and the historical record of 16 goals held by German forward Miroslav Klose.
